The historic Lewis Barn, also known as the Rich Barn, at Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) is scheduled for demolition on Monday, April 8, 2024. This barn holds significant historical value, with portions dating back to the late 18th century.

Originally from the Lewis Estate in Setauket, it was moved to OBVR in 1971. Unfortunately, the barn is slated for demolition due to deferred maintenance and extensive termite damage. This is a symptom of a larger issue: OBVR, owned by Nassau County, is facing chronic underfunding for the maintenance and care of its historic resources. Several other buildings have been demolished at the site – the 1743 Bedell House was razed in 2014.

The Lewis Barn has been stabilized from falling. We urge Nassau County to pause the demolition and work with organizations like Preservation Long Island and Three Village Historical Society to explore funding options that might save the barn including the New York State Historic Barn Rehabilitation Tax Credit.
