Preservation Long Island welcomes any and all approaches to protecting the Sag Harbor, New York SANS historic district including zoning overlays, which can be applied in addition to local historic district designation. In fact, local designation as a historic district would provide the strongest protection for SANS. We hope the Village of Sag Harbor Board of Trustees will also hold public hearings and an up-or-down vote for SANS designation as a local historic district.

Preservation Long Island's Preservation Director, Sarah Kautz attended the August 9th Village of Sag Harbor Board of Trustees meeting and raised questions related to the Adam Potter/Conifer Realty LLC redevelopment proposal. Despite common misconceptions, historic preservation and affordable housing can and do go together very well. However, the proposed expansive new commercial/retail complex, that includes some affordable housing units, entails outright demolition and intensive redevelopment of three locally designated contributing historic properties in the Sag Harbor Village Historic District, as well as one property that is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places - NPS.
