Join Preservation Long Island and The Caumsett Foundation for a special behind-the-scenes tour of the historic Dairy Barn Complex at Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve. This exclusive event offers a rare opportunity to explore one of Long Island’s most significant 20th-century agricultural sites and gain a deeper understanding of the estate’s rich history. Tour will be led by Caumsett Foundation Board Member and History Committee Liaison Chris Pata.

The tour will focus on the Dairy Barn Complex, originally constructed in the 1920s as part of Marshall Field III’s model farm. The complex includes a dry stock barn, hay barn, milking barn, horse barn, dairy, and other support buildings—totaling over 6,000 square feet. Vacant for more than 40 years, the structures were recently stabilized and restored over a six-year period with support from two Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) grants and matching funds from The Caumsett Foundation. Exterior elements were repaired and repainted, preserving the site’s historic character and preparing it for a new phase of interior rehabilitation.

In addition to exploring the barns, participants will learn about the broader history of the Caumsett estate, including the main house and grounds developed by Marshall Field III in the early 20th century. The tour will highlight Caumsett’s evolution from a private Gold Coast estate to a public preserve, and ongoing efforts to preserve its significant architecture and landscapes.

This event is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
