Joel Friedman, a volunteer docent at the Cradle of Aviation, began our tour of Mitchel Field Air Base and Flight Line outside the museum on October 20, 2018.
After the U.S. Army closed Mitchel Field in 1961, new construction for Nassau Community College (founded in 1959) transformed the 1,117-acre airbase, October 20, 2018.

Explore one of America’s premier historical air bases with the Cradle of Aviation’s volunteer docent Joel Friedman, and Gary Monti, Director of Museum Operations, who sponsored the site’s successful 2018 nomination for the National Register of Historic Places. Thanks to special access provided by Nassau County Community College, we’ll take a look inside Mitchel Field’s hospital building, a hidden gem nearly untouched since the 1930s!
