About Highwood:
Built in 1931 as a country house estate for the financier, Edwin Gould (1866-1933), Highwood was designed by Henry Corse and features formal garden and landscape design by Innocenti & Webel. Stylistically, the symmetrical brick main house with stately forecourt is modeled on historic English country-house design that draws on Palladian and Georgian precedents. Similarly, the formal landscape is also based on late 18th-century English models. Highwood was completed two years before Edwin Gould’s death. The son of railroad tycoon Jay Gould, Edwin was a successful financier who made his fortune consolidating the Continental and Diamond Match Companies. He then became executive vice-president at the Bowling Green Trust – his father’s trading firm – which eventually merged with the Equitable Trust Company.
