Between 1884 and 1906, Stanford White directed a nearly continuous program of additions, renovations, and landscaping at “Box Hill”, the estate in Saint James that he and Bessie White had purchased shortly after their marriage. While Bessie saw “Box Hill” as a gathering place for family and friends, White and his partners treated “Box Hill” as a laboratory for their ideas, enlarging the structure from a vernacular farmhouse to a highly developed essay on country house architecture and landscape design.

Sam White will discuss the history of “Box Hill” as a process reflecting Stanford White’s ambitions, ideals, and opportunities while highlighting his dual role as both architect and client.

Registration required — space is limited.
