This past weekend, we enjoyed a fantastic behind-the-scenes tour of the ongoing preservation work at the John and Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills. Even with many of the walls removed, the house still radiates warmth and peace. We cant wait to see the full vision of the @coltranehome come to life! 🎷 🎶

Music legend John Coltrane resided in Dix Hills at the Coltrane Home from 1964 until his death in 1967. His wife, Alice, lived in the house with her four children until 1973. Many important musical works were created at the Coltrane Home, including John Coltrane’s masterpiece, A Love Supreme. The house was also the site of Coltrane Studios, where Alice made many recordings and crafted her visionary spiritual jazz.

🌟 A Rare Opportunity to Step Inside the Coltrane Home—A National Historic Treasure 🎷🏡

This unassuming midcentury home in Dix Hills witnessed some of the most important moments in modern music history. It was here, in the summer of 1964, that John Coltrane secluded himself in an upstairs bedroom and emerged with the music that became A Love Supreme. In the years that followed, Alice Coltrane recorded visionary albums in the home’s downstairs studio—pioneering spiritual jazz that continues to inspire artists today.

But this cultural landmark nearly disappeared. In 2011, the Coltrane Home was listed on Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places list and named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation—alerts that helped galvanize local and national efforts to save it. Through grassroots advocacy and the leadership of the Coltrane family and the “Friends of the Coltrane Home,” demolition was averted and restoration began. In 2018, the site was recognized as a National Treasure by the National Trust.

Now preserved and on the path to becoming a museum, the Coltrane Home offers a rare look into the private lives and creative processes of two of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
