Robert Hefner has worked as a historic preservation consultant in East Hampton since 1978. His work has involved planning and supervising the restoration of historic buildings as well as working with municipalities in preserving historic districts and landmarks.
Mr. Hefner was written Historic Structure Reports to guide restoration and maintenance for many Long Island landmarks including: the Thomas Moran Studio; the Montauk Point Lighthouse; The Parrish Art Museum; the Arthur Dove/Helen Torr Cottage for the Heckscher Museum of Art; the Captain Mercator Cooper House for Rogers Memorial Library; the Nathaniel Rogers House for the Bridge Hampton Historical Society; Sylvester Manor for the Shelter Island Historical Society; Herald House for the Sag Harbor Historical Society; Halsey House for the Southampton Historical Museum; Home Sweet Home for the Village of East Hampton; and Duck Creek Farm, the Jonathan Barnes – Selah Lester House and The Second House for the Town of East Hampton.
Mr. Hefner has planned, completed drawings and specifications for and supervised restoration of the following historic buildings: Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran Studio, Dominy Shops, Second House, seven early-nineteenth-century Long Island windmills; Hook School House; Duck Creek Farm; Jonathan Barnes-Selah Lester House; Home Sweet Home; and the Montauk Point Lighthouse Keepers’ Dwelling. Mr. Hefner is the author of Windmills of Long Island (W.W. Norton and Co., 1984), Alfred A. Scheffer’s Beach Hampton Houses, 1941 to 1965 and editor of East Hampton’s Heritage: An Architectural Record (W.W. Norton and Co., 1982). He received the 1991 New York State Historic Preservation Award and the 1986 Architectural Heritage Honor Award from the Preservation League of New York State.
