This program will start with a scavenger hunt through our current exhibition Making a Name for Himself: The Life & Art of F. Edwin Church, 1876-1975. Kids will search for flowers, birds, patterns, and people in Church’s lively portrait and landscape paintings. Along the way, families will discover how Church used Japanese design elements to create eye-catching backgrounds for his portraits.
After the scavenger hunt, create your own portrait in a hands-on collage workshop. Kids will use a variety of textures, patterns, and paper to design their own vibrant backdrops—just like Church did—and create unique self-portraits that blend tradition with imagination. Perfect for ages 5–12, but all are welcome!
