Do you know the name of the first woman Postmaster of Sag Harbor? As we close out Women's History Month we are excited to share this Certificate of Appointment for Genevieve French signed in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt. This document, found in our archives, prompted us to learn more.
Our research led us to a 1982 article published in the Sag Harbor Express about Sag Harbor's early post offices. In 1889 the community petitioned for Genevieve French to serve out the last six years of the term of her late father Hannibal French, making her the first woman to hold this position for the Village of Sag Harbor. She was hired and served for those years and was appointed again in 1899 with subsequent reappointments through 1915.
According to the US Postal Service, women served as Postmasters in the United States more than a century before they won the right to vote. Over the course of the 1800s, the number of women Postmasters increased from fewer than a dozen to more than 6,000. By the end of the twentieth century, more than half of all Postmasters were women!
