Facing Slavery: Reframing the Lloyd Family Portraits
When: Saturday, July 31, 2021, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Where: Preservation Long Island Exhibition Gallery, 161 Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724
Cost: Suggested donation $10.00 (Advance registration required)
Join curator Lauren Brincat for a tour through the Lloyd family portraits, an important group of early American paintings recently donated to Preservation Long Island. Learn about the entangled stories of the Lloyd family and the people they enslaved, including writer Jupiter Hammon (1711–before 1806), for over a hundred years at the Manor of Queens Village (today Lloyd Neck). While Hammon’s surviving words embody his thoughts and identity, the multi-generational collection of Lloyd family portraits give a face to at least one side of a story about kinship and bondage across the eighteenth century.
