The manor house was completed in 1767 as the stately seat of the Lloyd family’s 3,000-acre colonial estate. Just ten years after the grand manor was built, British soldiers occupied the house after the devastating American defeat at the Battle of Brooklyn/Long Island on August 27, 1776.
The virtual tour gives you special access to this historic house while taking you back in time to the eve of British occupation during the Revolutionary War. As you click through the tour, you’ll meet three people preparing to leave Lloyd Manor before British troops arrive, including: Joseph Lloyd (1716–1780), the third lord of the Manor of Queens Village; Jupiter Hammon (1711–ca.1806), one of the first published African American authors who served the Lloyd family in slavery for most of his life; and Hannah, a woman who worked as an enslaved laborer at the manor house. Additionally, you’ll see digital images of fascinating historical documents, such as poetry by Jupiter Hammon as well as handwritten letters to and from Joseph Lloyd.
