About The Art of Edward Lange Project
The Art of Edward Lange Project is a collaborative effort to reexamine the life and art of Edward Lange (1846–1912), a German immigrant and prolific painter who lived and worked on Long Island during a time of rapid societal, cultural, and infrastructural transformation. Between 1870 and 1889, he produced detailed works of art in watercolor, gouache, ink, and lead pencil depicting local homesteads, businesses, and communities across the region. For the first time, The Art of Edward Lange website brings together, in one place, over 100 of Lange’s artworks spread across more than 25 public and private collections. Featuring high-resolution photography, an interactive map, and new research, The Art of Edward Lange website is a valuable resource for understanding Long Island’s history and its ever-evolving landscapes.
The launch of the The Art of Edward Lange website is the first phase of a larger initiative that also includes the mounting of a full-scale gallery exhibition at the Long Island Museum (opening September 22, 2022) and the creation of a new, definitive publication about the artist and his work. Generous funding for The Art of Edward Lange Project is provided by the Gerry Charitable Trust.
