Title: Custom House Administrator

Position
Reporting to the Education & Public Programs Director, the Custom House Administrator serves as Preservation Long Island’s representative to the local community and is responsible for organizing volunteer schedules, conducting house tours, and coordinating with Headquarters staff on other programs at the Custom House located in Sag Harbor.

Duties
• Opening and closing the house for the visiting public, including fee collection and
reconciliation, and booking management
• Recruit, manage and coordinate volunteer educators, including time-keeping
• Coordinate house tour schedules and assist in the implementation of other programs at the
property if needed
• Delivering substantive house tours through the interpretation of the building, its stories, and
collections based on a thorough knowledge of the site’s history
• Ensure that the house, collections, and site are well maintained, reporting any problems to
headquarters staff

Position runs from June through October, Friday through Sunday, 10:30am – 4pm. Paid training will begin in April.

Qualifications:
This position requires a motivated and reliable individual with excellent interpersonal
communication skills and the ability to manage time and engage with people. The ideal candidate has an enthusiasm for history, story-telling, and museums, and is willing to learn and share history with others. Experience in historic house interpretation and museums is preferred. The candidate will operate effectively both independently and in a team environment.

Terms:
Candidates must have access to a car and be able to drive. Compensation is based on a rate of
$22.00 per hour.

Headquartered in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, Preservation Long Island advances the importance of
historic preservation in the region through advocacy, education, and stewardship. Working to raise awareness, appreciation, and support for the protection of a shared past, our program areas include interpreting three historic sites; collecting art and material culture pertaining to Long Island history; creating publications, exhibits and public events (both in-person and virtual); and
