Seventy years ago, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities was founded. Concerned over intense post-World War II development, and influenced by heightened American patriotism, its early members sought to protect Long Island’s preindustrial past. At the Society’s center was Howard C. Sherwood, a wealthy urban antiquarian who bequeathed to the Society his collection of American antiques and his eighteenth-century country retreat in East Setauket: the Sherwood-Jayne Farm.
As we celebrate our 70th anniversary under a new name, Howard Sherwood: Preserving Long Island honors the legacy of Preservation Long Island’s founder. The exhibition showcases highlights from his collection, and through his personal archive, explores the people, places, and ideas that inspired his passion for early Americana and the creation of an organization dedicated to preserving Long Island’s history.
