Visit Joseph Lloyd Manor or Sherwood-Jayne Farm for professional development credit:
The Joseph Lloyd Manor House offers afternoon and week-end teacher workshops on the history of “Colonial Long Island” and the “Slave Experience in New York.” The Colonial Long Island workshop explores the day-to-day life of an English colonist just prior to the American Revolution. Visit the Georgian home of the Lloyd family and see fine examples of the architecture and furnishings of this prominent Long Island family.
The Slave Experience in New York visits the institution of slavery on Colonial Long Island and the reasons for its existence and expansion. We will explore the Lloyd Manor contribution toward the slave experience with a video re-enactment of six Lloyd family slaves, including the first published African-American poet, Jupiter Hammon. Workshops are 1 to 2 hours.
The Sherwood-Jayne Farm Workshop offers afternoon and week-end teacher workshops on the daily life of a late 18th century farm family. Teachers visit historic outbuildings such as the barn, corn crib, ice house and privy. The Sherwood-Jayne House is a typical Long Island farm house with an oversized post and beam construction system of framing derived from the English.
Preservation Long Island teacher workshops are aligned with the national and NYS social studies curriculum for 4th, 5th, 7th, and 11th grades. Copies of primary documents and bibliographies for each workshop are provided to all teachers.
