Jupiter Hammon Project: Confronting Slavery at Joseph Lloyd Manor Virtual Lecture and Q&A
Darren St. George, Preservation Long Island’s Director of Education and Public Programs, is the featured guest speaker for the August installment of the Three Village Historical Society (TVHS) Virtual Lecture Series
Date: Monday, August 16, 2021 at 7PM via Zoom
Cost: $5 suggested donation for the general public and free for TVHS members. Registration is required for members and non-members.
The presentation outlines the development, execution, and findings of Preservation Long Island’s three virtual roundtables which took place in 2020 from August to October. These discussions were the first phase of a major initiative to develop a more relevant and equitable interpretation of Joseph Lloyd Manor, one of Preservation Long Island’s historic houses and a site that enslaved generations of people of African descent, including Jupiter Hammon (1711–ca.1806), one of the earliest published African American authors who was born on Long Island.
